Bible Facebook

I'm taking a moment to procrastinate from homework, think, and be ironic.

The other day i was in my Intro to Disciple Making class (which i'm really excited to be taking). My professor was lecturing, paused, looked at us all and said, "let's take a moment to talk about Facebook."
I sat up because as a child of Generation Y... i know Facebook.
"When you post a Bible verse on your status... what does that do?"

It felt like every kid in the room squirmed and started raising their hands to defend themselves and in a way say, "How dare you not like the Bible!!!" Mr. Churchwell, from what i have seen, likes to make us students feel uncomfortable and make us all want to rise up together and raise pitch forks at his door. (Most of the time i feel like i'm on the "student" team vs. the "Mr. Churchwell" team)

But

This time i felt like my professor had a point. So many times i have seen a Facebook status of a Bible verse that to me, the reader, aside from the fact that it's God's Word... means nothing.

"The medium is the message"- Marshall McLuhan

Rarely is it safe to pull a single Bible verse and use it. My feelings as a believer, agnostic, atheist, or the kid from school that you really aren't friends with will most often dictate my interpretation and application of that Bible verse rather than it's true meaning in the context of the Bible.
The conclusion i think our class came to is that there should always be a preface or epilogue to your status. Why are you posting this? What does it mean?

I also started to think about how i fit into the matter. I've been reading Matthew and having conversations with people and learning about myself and i think that Facebook is just another way for me and others to display our Christian-ess. At first i thought that was okay... but now i wonder the motives i have behind it all. "Why did i post that status update?"
